Where the shape comes from
A cracked bone picked clean — what is left when the flesh is gone. It marks dying and decay: 死 is a person kneeling beside such bones, and 残 is what remains when something has been broken. Read on its own as dǎi it means simply "bad", the opposite of 好, as in 好歹.
