Where the shape comes from
A drum mounted on a stand, decorated at the top, with a hand holding a stick raised beside it to strike — the whole act of drumming caught in one picture. It gives 鼓励, to encourage, literally to drum up strength in someone, and 鼓掌, to applaud, to drum the palms together, the ordinary sound of clapping described the same way a drummer’s beat once was.
