Where the shape comes from
A foot pointing downward, toes trailing — the same drawing used across several radicals for a leg in motion, here reduced to its simplest stroke pattern. A foot arriving at a mouth-shaped opening 口 gives 各, each, the sense that everyone arrives separately at their own place; the dictionary also files 处, to reside, and 备, to prepare, under this shape, though their own histories are more complicated than the foot alone explains.
